Description
Deutsch: Philipp Melanchthon tauft ein Kind, assistiert von zwei Paten, wobei der Pate zur Linken mit dem Taufkissen wohl Lucas Cranach d.Ä. ist. Rechts neben ihm zeigt der Pfarrer Caspar Aquila die entsprechende Stelle aus dem Markusevangelium in lateinischer und deutscher Ausgabe, Mk 16, 16: Wer do gläubet und gteuft wird, der wird selig werden; wer aber nit gleibt, wird verdamt werden. Die Seitenwände des monumentalen Taufbeckens schmücken groteske Elemente. In den dekorativen Ranken sind männliche Masken von Meeresungeheuern sowie ein an einer Säule sitzender Mann und eine nackte Wassernymphe zu erkennen. Eine Gruppe festlich gekleideter Frauen nimmt an der Taufe teil, die Frau am unteren Bildrand im Pelzmantel und mit dem Rücken zum Betrachter - wahrscheinlich Kurfürstin Sybille von Kleve - lädt als Rezeptionsfigur den Betrachter ein, an der Taufe teilzunehmen.
