Summary[edit]

Description The Lower Eastside Girls Club was founded in 1996 when the Boys Club of New York opted out of the natiowide merger which created the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, choosing to retain its "boys only" policy at its two facilities, including a large on on the Lower East Side. The building they currently occupy at 56 1st Street, between First and Second Avenues in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, while building a larger new facility at 101 Avenue D, was built in 2002 and designed by Craig Tooman of Cutsogeorge, Tooman & Allen. It is a private home from which the club rents the street floor and basement at below market rates. (Sources: Lower Eastside Girls Club website, NYC GIS map, NYT article)
