Description |
English: The Lowell School, originally named the Columbia School, was built in 1889 on East Mercer Street on Capitol Hill. At that time, the area was outside the city limits. Within 20 years, the city had grown and the school was surrounded by a new, wealthy neighborhood. Handwritten on sleeve: Columbia School, 1911. Caption by MOHAI staff.
Either this or File:Lowell School, ca 1911 (MOHAI 5967).jpg (at right) is presumably misdated. That picture shows a second major building; this picture does not. According to https://www.historylink.org/File/10547 (reproduced from "Building for Learning", a generally reliable history of Seattle schools) the additions to the Lowell School were in 1904 and 1919. The 1919 addition is still standing, and is a brick building that doesn't look at all like that second major building. So possibly that other image is circa 1911, and this one is before 1904. |
