Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lough Patrick, Donaghanie This disappearing lake was recently shown on "Lesser Spotted Ulster" - see http://new.u.tv/Blogs/Joe-Mahon/Beragh/3140c14a-4f46-4ff0-ace7-5a255f7bc17a

It once occupied an area of 13 acres and was abundant with wild life, including birds and dragonflies. All that remains is a small area in the centre of the screen and it is hazardous to go any further in case of sinking. It is thought that modern farming practices have led to its demise and it is rumoured that the day that Lough Patrick fills over, it will be the end of the world.

It was on the site of a pilgrimage which saw thousands descend from all over Ireland to meditate while crawling on hands and knees around the lake from which Saint Patrick banished the serpent. The original St. Patrick’s church does not exist any more and now not even the locals know much about it.

Lough Patrick, which is accessed from the Donaghanie Road, is marked on the map opposite Donaghanie old graveyard (which is accessed from the Crevenagh Road side) but there is no indication of water to be seen.
