Summary[edit]
DescriptionLost bridge- somethings missing (geograph 1928054).jpg |
English: Lost bridge: something's missing Glasgow became renowned for its "bridge to nowhere" near Charing Cross, a relic of an uncompleted road scheme. The former mining village of Douglas Water can go one better: it has a bridge from nowhere to nowhere! Until 5 October 1964 this little bridge carried trains between Lanark and Muirkirk. On that day the line west from Ponfeigh, the station for Douglas Water, closed completely. Not only was the track taken up but the local farmer has removed the embankments both sides of this bridge to give his sheep greater freedom to roam. Coal trains and returning empty trucks continued to run as far as Ponfeigh until 15 January 1968 to serve Douglas Colliery, from whose waste tip this photo was taken. The brown hills in the background have been built more recently as a result of opencast coal mining. |
