| Description |
English: Seattle's First Hill got its name because it was the closest hill to the downtown area. Its early residents included the Dennys, Terrys, Minors, Burkes, and other members of Seattle's social elite. From their large homes on the hillside, they could look down across the growing city where they made their living. The neighborhood began to change around 1908, when Swedish and Cabrini Hospitals bought property on First Hill.
This photo shows the northeast corner of Minor Avenue and Columbia Streets in the 1890s. The John Sanderson family lived in the large home on the corner. Swedish Hospital later built a new building nearby.
