Transcript InfoField | The Bank of England. Nearly opposite the Mansion House stands the Bank of England, often called "The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street. " It was designed by Sir. J. Soane in 1788, and occupies three acres of ground in three separate parishes. It is the only bank in London which has the power of issuing paper money, it em-ploys about 900 persons, and contains in its vaults about £20,000,000 in gold and silver. The Bank was established by William Paterson, a Scot, in 1694. |
