The question has been raised in regardto the use of the roller in finishing up carand engine journals, that as soon as theyget very hot, from any cause, the skin ofiron on the surface which has been com-pacted and made more dense by the roller,will resume its original shape, and thiswill leave the journal in worse conditionthan if it had never been rolled. There may be something in this as atheory, but those who roll journals as asteady thing say that the journals comeback to the shop (when wheels arechanged) in better shape than those notrolled, and so far those who roll themseem to have the best of the argument.
