levers, which was a closeapproach to several of this type in use atvarious times. There were four gridironvalves used, two steam and two exhaust, tlie exhaust valves moving full stroke atall times, and the steam valves cutting offunder control of valve motion. This wasan approach to stationary practice, whichmakes pretty indicator cards, but doesntseem to be practical in railroading. The firebox was also a novelty—or per-haps freak would better describe it. Ascan be seen, it was double, and consistedof two corrugated flues joined togetherat the front end in the boiler shell proper. In appearance it was like a twin sweetpotato or a double-barrel water spout, andin practice it did as well as might havebeen expected, with a result that none ofthem are in use to-day. Comment is un-necessary. A careful observer has said ofthis engine that in every point where itdiffered from a standard engine it wasweak, and to these differences it owed itsfailure. August, 1898. One of the pliilosophers of tliis paperrecently had the pleasure of assisting inthe indicating of the new Brooks engineson the Wisconsin Central, and observingtheir performance under road conditionsin which they were loaded to the, limit oftheir power. The indicator was appliedwith the sole object in view of portray-ing the action of the piston valves withwhich these engines are equipped, andnoting the effect of the short steam pas-sages on the initial and mean effectivepressures. The valves have internal ad-mission—that is, take steam at the inneredge of the ports, and exhaust at theouter edge, and having a very large portarea together with a short distance forsteam to travel in reaching the piston, it lour miles an hour, with a load of 1,378tons behind, the tender, or 1,494 tons in-cluding engine and train.
