SHIELDS TEN-WHEELEIt. Mr. Shields, in writing about the en-gines, says that he received valuable as-sistance from Mr. James E. Sague, me-chanical engineer of the Schenectady Lo-comotive Works, in the designing of thelocomotives. A very conspicuous featureabout the engine is the large heating sur-face. The boiler, which is of carbonsteel, has a diameter of 62 inches at small-est ring. The firebox is 963-16 incheslong, 40^ inches wide. The front depthis 7554 inches, and the back depth 62J4inches. The boiler contains 320 flues, 2inches diameter, giving a heating surfaceof 2,i64.2i square feet. The firebox has53-3 square feet of heating surface, mak-ing the total heating surface of the boiler2.317.51 square feet. The engine is fitted with two No. 8Hancock inspirators: Dean sander; Goll-mar bell ringer, and Mcintosh blow-offcock, operated by air.
