Summary[edit]

Description In an attempt to wrest the world speed record away from Britain's Gloster Meteor, Lockheed produced the one-off special XP-80R. It featured a cut-down cockpit with much reduced frontal area, a water injection system for its Allison engine, an ultra-slick surface finish, revised high recovery, low drag intakes which were more vertical than horizontal, sharp wing leading edges, and clipped wings. Practice runs began at Muroc in October, 1945, but it took until June of the following year to gain the record at a top average speed of 624 mph. (Peter M. Bowers)
