When its dark theyll all be lightedup. Thatll be a fine sight! Toys too, therell be, wont there? said Patty. Father Christmas nodded his head. Andsweeties, he added, expressively. I could feel Patty trembling, and my own heartbeat fast. The thought which agitated us both, \vasthis- Was Father Christmas bringing the tree tous? But very anxiety, and some modesty also,kept us from asking outright. Only when the old man shouldered his tree, andprepared to move on, I cried in despair, Oh, areyou going ? Im coming back by-and-by, said he.How soon ? cried Patty. About four oclock, said the old man, smiling, Im only going up yonder. And, nodding and smiling as he went, he passedawray down the lane. Ithought the latter, and suggested to Patty that per-haps he had some place underground, like Aladdinscave, where he got the candles, and all the prettythings for the tree. This idea pleased us both, andwe amused ourselves by wondering what Old FatherChristmas would choose for us from his stores inthat wonderful hole where he dressed his Christmas-trees. I wonder, Patty, said I, why theres no pic-ture of Father Christmass dog in the book. Forat the old mans heels in the lane there crept a littlebrown and white spaniel, looking very dirty in thesnow. Perhaps its a new dog that hes got to takecare of his cave, said Patty. When we went in-doors we examined the pictureafresh by the dim light from the passage window,but there was no dog there. My father passed us at this moment, and pattedmy head. * Father, said I, I dont know, but I dothink Old Fath
