. If by chance there were any quarrelling, or symp-toms of misbehaviour, the man in the moon wouldcry Manners ! and all was quiet at once. Talking of manners, the civility of the beasts inBeastland was most conspicuous. They came incrowds and welcomed Benjy, each after his ownfashion. The cats rubbed their heads against hislegs and held their tails erect, as if they were pre-senting arms. The dogs wagged theirs, and barkedand capered round him; except one French poodle,who :< sat up during the whole visit, as an act ofpoliteness. The little birds sang and chirruped.The pigeons sat on his shoulders and cooed; twolittle swallows clung to the eaves of his hat, andtwitched their tails, and said Kiwit! kiwit! Apeacock with a spread tail went before him; and aflock of rose-coloured cockatoos brought up the rear.Presently a wise and solemn old elephant came andknelt before Benjy; and Benjy got on to his backand rode in triumph, the other beasts following.
