English: Housing 21 is a major provider of services for older people in England. A not for profit organisation with charitable status, Housing 21 started life in 1964 as the Royal British Legion Housing Association, becoming Housing 21 in 1992. At that time it extended a commitment to work with all older people, not just those with a service background.
Today Housing 21 owns or manages over 16,000 sheltered and extra care apartments and bungalows in around 400 schemes. Although Housing 21’s roots are in housing, it has become one of the largest providers of home care services, delivering around 30,000 hours of care each week. Realising that issues around dementia and mental health would become key elements of its work, Housing 21 developed a close working relationship with Dementia Voice, a dementia services development centre for the South West, based in Bristol. This led to the integration of Dementia Voice with Housing 21 and the formation of Housing 21 Dementia Voice , making it the only housing association with a specialist department providing expertise in meeting the needs of older people with dementia. Housing 21 also undertakes research to understand the needs, views and aspirations of older people. Recently published reports include “Is it that time already?”, the findings of a six month service improvement project with the National End of Life Care Programme and “‘Building Choices’: Personal Budgets and Older Peoples Housing”.
