A Ferocious-looking Reptile. The Kangaroo Rat nose into a solid bank of sand that was the endof the gallery he had entered by. Since wewere all playing fairy-tale, I, the Giant, didnot hesitate to put the Dragon where he couldharm the fairies no longer. After hours of patient digging and measuringI got a map of the underground world wherethe Perodipus passes the daytime. The central chamber could be nearly reachedby any of the entrances, but one not knowingthe secret would have passed by and comeout into the air again at another door. Nomatter how often he went in, he never wouldhave found the nest or any of the real treasureof the home, for the road to the nest was pluggedwith earth each time the owner left it. And this is exactly what happened to theHuajalote; for he seemed to have an idea thatthere was a secret passage if he only could find it,and no doubt thought it was somewhere throughthe bank of earth he was boring into, thoughreally he was not anywhere near to the spot.
