Summary[edit]

Description
English: Liverwort Liverworts are small plants related to mosses. Nearly 300 species are native to the British Isles, but broadly liverworts can be divided into two types: thallose and leafy. Thallose liverworts, like this one, have a flattened, plate-like body, the thallus, the shape of which resembles the lobes of the liver. The plants, which evolved earlier than vascular (veined) plants, cling to damp surfaces as here on the banks of this shady sunken lane.
