Description

Liver of Pvt. Charles Crelman (CP 1153), National Museum of Health and Medicine.

Description: The liver of Private Charles Crelman, Company H, 118th Pennsylvania volunteers, who was wounded by a gunshot on September 30th, 1864 at the Battle of Poplar Grove Church, Virginia. He developed pyemia (blood poisoning) and died on October 25, 1864. Caption reads: “Liver, showing metastatis abscesses. Pvt. Chas. Crelman Co. H. 118th Pa.”

History is on reverse: “Lincoln General Hospital. Washington, D.C., November 8, 1864. Ward 12, Bed 27,--Name, Charles Crelman, Private Co. H, 118th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. Admitted to Hospital October 8, 1864. He received a gun shot wound of right humerus, near elbow joint Sept. 30, 1864, at the Battle of Poplar Grove Church, Va. Ball entered about the middle third of right humerus on the outer aspect of the arm, causing a considerable comminution of the bone to within one inch of the condyles, and was removed from the inner side in a direct line from the point of entrance. Symptoms of Pyemia commencing Oct. 18, 1864. Died Oct. 25, 1864. Autopsy: Icteric tinge of skin and conjunction of eyes. Brain softened; Lungs, innumerable abscesses existing. Heart, small pus clots distributed along the columnae carnae and inner walls of right auricle and ventricle. Kidneys, deposit of pus sacs in cortical portion. Condition of the Liver, at the time it was Photographed, much enlarged and bestudded with abscesses of a Pyemic character.—Weight 124 ounces. Photographed at Lincoln General Hospital. J.C. McKee, Ass’t Surgeon, U.S.A., in charge.”
