She thought thematter over for several days, and finally decidedthat it would be better to give up her place asnurse. She was very fond of the little girl, butshe was still fonder of her boy. So she ceasedto be the childs nurse, and went to her own home. The little girl grieved day and night forher kind nurse. Nothing would console her. Hermother bought her a little pony, but she would ntride it; wonderful dolls, but she would nt lookat them ; the finest cakes and candies, but shewould nt eat them ; the most beautiful dresses,but she would nt wear them. Matters went on inthis way for I dont know how long, until, finally,one day the little girls mother concluded to sendfor the nurse. One day in each week, the gardenerwould open the big gates of the park in order totrundle away the trash and weeds that he hadraked up. The little girl watched him open thegate, and then, when the gardener went for hiswheelbarrow, she slipped out at the gate andwent running across the fields. For a time the little girl was perfectly happy.She gave herself up to the pleasure of beingalone, of being able to do as she chose, with noone to tell her not to do this or do that, or tosay come here, or go yonder. So she wentrunning across the fields, looking at the birds, andtrying to catch butterflies, and singing to herselfsome of the beautiful songs that her nurses sonhad taught her. o Now it happened that when she ran out ofthe garden gate, in her haste to keep out of sightof the gardener, she went away from her nurseshouse instead of going towards it.
