Lisbon Town Museum, Campo Grande, Lisbon, Portugal Material: Oil on canvas Collection: Lisbon Town Museum Inv.: BIOGRAPHY Descendente de família de origem alemã, Alfredo Keil interessa-se por pintura e música desde muito jovem. Estuda na Academia de Belas-Artes e publica a sua primeira obra musical (Pensée Musicale) com 12 anos, e obtém êxitos com óperas como D. Branca, libreto de Almeida Garrett. Na sequência do ultimato inglês de 1890, Keil concebe a sua obra mais popular, A Portuguesa (letra de Henrique Lopes de Mendonça). Este canto patriótico seria cantado nos momentos mais marcantes da luta republicana, como na efémera república do Porto em 31 de Janeiro de 1891 ou, já depois da morte de Keil, na revolução de 5 de Outubro de 1910, sendo adoptado pela assembleia constituinte de 1911 como hino nacional. Na pintura de Keil destacam-se as paisagens e as cenas de interior, em obras de traço fino e delicado que revelam ainda um gosto pelo romantismo, herdado da sua educação alemã, mas que introduzem já valores naturalistas. Keil interessa-se também pelo coleccionismo, arqueologia, etnografia e pela actividade literária. Publica Breve notícia dos instrumentos de Música antigos e modernos da Colecção Keil (1904), Colecções e Museus de Arte em Portugal (1905) ou Tojos e Rosmaninhos, colectânea de poesias ilustrada pelo artista (1908).
