Description
English: Frontispiece by Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759) of Linnaeus, C. (1738), Hortus Cliffortianus. The plate shows Mother Earth, seated on a lion and lioness, holding the keys to the garden. At her feet are a pot with Cliffortia and a plan of the Hartekamp garden. To the left a negress brings her an Aloe from Africa, an Arabian woman offers Coffea arabica from Asia and a befeathered American indian brings Hernandia from America. On a pedestal is a bust, possibly portraying George Clifford. On the right is a banana in flower and fruit. A young god Apollo, with the head of Linnaeus, steps forward, bringing light in his left hand and with his right hand casting aside the shroud of darkness around the goddess. Underfoot he tramples the dragon of falsehood, a reference to the counterfeit Hydra at Hamburg exposed as a fraud by Linnaeus while on his way to Holland. De gravure toont Moeder Aarde, gezeten op een leeuw en een leeuwin, de sleutels tot de tuin in haar hand. Aan haar voeten een pot met Cliffortia en een plattegrond van de tuin van de Hartekamp. Links brengt een negerin haar een Aloe uit Afrika, een Arabische vrouw biendt een plant van de Coffea arabica uit Azië aan en een gevederde indiaanse brengt Hernandia, uit Amerika. Op een hoog voetstuk staat een buste die mogelijk George Clifford voorstelt. Aan de rechterzijde zien we een bananenplant met bloemen en vruchten, en een jonge god Apollo, met het hoofd van Linnaeus, die in zijn linkerhand licht brengt en met zijn rechterhand de sluiers der duisternis afwerpt van de godin. Deutsch: Frontispiz von Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759) aus Linnaeus, C. (1738), Hortus Cliffortianus. Der Stich zeigt die Mutter Erde, sitzend auf einem Löwen und einer Löwin, mit dem Schlüssel des Gartens in der Hand, zu ihren Füssen ein Topf mit Cliffortia und ein Plan des Gartens. Zur linken Seite bringt Ihr eine Afrikanerin eine Aloe aus ihrer Heimat, eine arabische Frau bietet Coffea arabica aus Asien an und eine befiederte Indianerin bringt Hernandia aus Amerika. Auf einem Fussgestell steht eine Büste, möglicherweise George Clifford darstellend. Zur rechten Seite sehen wir eine Banane in voller Blüte und einen jungen Apollo allerdings mit dem Kopf von Linnaeus.
