B.C. 55—A.D. 449 It is to the pen of a Roman general that we are indebted for ourfirst acquaintance with the history of Britain. JuHus Ceesar hadin three years conducted his legions from the foot of the Alpsto the mouth of the Rhine. From the coast of the Morini hecould descry the white cliffs of the neighbouring island, and theconqueror of Gaul aspired to the glory of adding Britain to thedominions of Rome. On the 20th of August in juiius Caesarthe fifty-fifth year before the Christian era, Caesar lands insailed from Calais with the infantry of two legions, Britain,and, in a few hours, cast anchor before the spot now ^•^- 55-occupied by the town of Deal. The beach was gained aftera short struggle with the natives, whose untaught valour yieldedto the arms and discipline of the Roman soldiers.
