English: Tree removal with a 40 ton crane.
A 120' tree fallen during a hurricane became snagged in a 120' tree 60 feet away. The tree it was resting in was slightly uprooted from the impact of the other tree hitting it and had a lean of about 5% toward the house. We rigged the fallen tree at 50' and 75' from the base to other nearby trees in order to secure it while the top was released from the other tree. The safest way to do this was for the climber, Aaron Taddiken, to tie in to the crane cable above the ball to a clevice and to lanyard in to the tree just above where the detachment cut was to be made. With proper and well planned out rigging points and cutting techniques this is a far more controllable position to be in for the climber than it is to be attached to the lower trunk where the forces are unknown and therefore unpredictable. There was no tie in point from another tree that would provide a safe swing away for the climber if the trunk were to drop or spring upwards. This is a picture of just after that critical separation cut with the climber riding out the cut piece safely and securely in a very controlled manner. |
