Lilia Tarawa, is a lady who has experienced the absolute extreme of living in a community which does not value human’s equally and rules by irrational control. Lilia was born into the infamous, Gloriavale Christian Community. Gloriavale, was and is, a 500 strong cult, founded in 1969, by Lilia’s Grandfather. Until she was 18, she lived in a bedroom with her family of nine siblings and their parents. Lilia recalls many great memories from her childhood. Sadly, there was a much more sinister side to their ‘community’. The community was in fact, a cult, where everyone was basically brainwashed and indoctrinated. The role of women from a young age, was cleaning, washing, ironing, cooking, knitting and to bear children. Lilia was raised to think that she had to be submissive to men. All information was controlled. Humiliation was a common theme and the physical abuse was often public and difficult to witness. At 18, Lilia and her family left and were exposed to the big wide world, which posed many challenges…. These days Lilia is a sought after public speaker, an author and a business coach. She truly is a remarkable woman, with an incredible story to share. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.
