English: Signage at the lighthouse at Point Lookout, Maryland. This is the southernmost point of the state of Maryland. It exists at the mouth of the Potomac River, as it empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

The federal government erected a lighthouse on the tip of the point in 1830. The one-and-a-half story wooden and masonry lighthouse was expanded to a full second story in 1883. It remained active until the Navy purchased it in 1965. An automated light was placed offshore, and the onshore lighthouse deactivated. However, the Navy maintained light-keepers at the onshore lighthouse 1981 to ensure that the off-shore light was serviced.

Point Lookout Lighthouse is one of the most haunted sites in Maryland! In the 1980s, an investigation team recorded more than 24 disembodied voices at the Point Lookout Lighthouse (both male and female). A male voice was recorded saying, "Fire if they get too close to you." A female voice was heard referring to "my home" and another male voice said, "Let us not take objection to what they are doing." Several parts of the Point Lookout Lighthouse contain cold spots, and a rotten smell emanates from a certain room at odd times. (It goes away when you mention that Confederate soldiers and spies were held there.)

During a séance at the Point Lookout Lighthouse in the 1970s, a photograph was taken which showed the indistinct form of a man in soldier garb leaning against a wall. No one attending the séance saw the apparition; it was noticed only weeks later when the photograph was developed!

The forested area around the Point Lookout Lighthouse is also said to be haunted. Park rangers and visitors have seen ghostly figures running across roads in the park. The figures always cross the road after the person has passed (and can be seen only in a rear-view mirror).

Lighthouse keeper Gerry Sword also tells the tale of a stormy night when he lit three identical candles and put them in a candelabrum in the living room. He left the room, and heard a loud thump come from the living room. Fearing the candelabrum had fallen over, he rushed back into the living room. The candelabrum was undisturbed. But one candle had burned down an inch. Another had furned four inches. And the third had burned almost to the floor. Shockingly, an inch-long piece of unburned candle now lay on the floor. It was as if someone had cut the third candle in two, extinguished the lit portion and put it on the floor, and then lit the portion still in the candelabrum.

Sword also reported hearing snoring in the kitchen, voices in back of the house, voices in the front yard, calls for help on the water, and misty forms moving through the house. Another lighthouse keeper heard heavy boots walking up and down the hall, heard a woman's voice singing, the sound of men laughing and talking in the living room, and transparent figures in the basement. Visitors to the lighthouse have heard their name being called, and have seen a woman in a blue dress in the living room.
