u IN GRENADA AND CARRIACOU 163 negro lad, ask to be directed to the lake, and after showing hisignorance of the way several times, he admitted that he had only beenthere once when he was a little child. We had driven about sevenmiles and had evidently overshot the maik, being now directed to goback about a mile. Even here no lake was visible, but fortunately wefound a negro on the road who was willing to guide us to the place,on seeing which the mistake of the driver could be understood. Hehad evidently retained a vague idea that the lake was so near the sea-front as to be visible from the road which runs along the coast, whilein reality it was quite far enough back to be missed by anyone whodid not know the landmarks well, being nearly half a mile from thesea and separated from it by a steep hill which evidently once formedpart of the side of the volcano.
