the Gate of Heaven!^ Gen. xxviii. 17. THE CHURCH, which is fituated in a fomewhat commandingpofition on rifing ground, is dedicated to S. Mary the B. Virgin. It confifts of a fine Chancel, a Nave with north and fouth aifles, a fbuthPorch, and weft Tower, with the aifles prolonged on either fide of it. The Tower and weft doorway would appear to be the moft ancient por-tions of the prefent church : for that there have been a fucceflion ofchurches on the fame fite admits of little doubt. The earlieft of thefewas probably built by one of the Saxon kings of Kent, whilft as yettheir palace was at Eaftry Court. Thus we may fairly claim for ourChurch a royal foundation. From the narrow zigzag moulding round the femicircular arch of theweft door, and certain diaper patterns cut in the ftones of the tympanum ofthe fame doorway, as well as from the folid piers which fupport the towerar^li^ we may judge the lower part of the tower to date from the end ofthe Xlth or beginning of the Xllth century.

Theextenfion of the fouth aifle, which is now curtained off and ufed as aveftry, is only acceffible from the tower: the former entrance into it fromthe fouth aifle being blocked up by a huge buttrefs, which the fettlementof the fouth piers of the tower rendered neceffary for the fafety of thisportion of the church. Mr. White fuggefts that this fettlement mayhave been caufed, and the buttrefs required, by the breaking through ofthe arch for this extenfion ; but Mr. W. S. Walford thinks that theextenfion was added to hide the buttrefs. The correfponding extenfionof the north aifle is of later date, and formerly had a floor dividing itinto two ftories, the upper one being ufed as a Parvife or Priefts Cham-ber. Mr. White thinks the fouth extenfion may have been added as a Bap-tiftery, and the
