El soberano napolitano, que en este retrato aparenta tener unos veinte años, viste uniforme de color azul oscuro, pantalón sujeto por cinturón blanco y abotonado en la pierna, casaca con vueltas rojas, y calza botas de montar de caña alta. Su peluca, blanca y corta, deja libre una larga coleta sobre su espalda. Se cubre con tricornio decorado con escarapela roja y sus manos se protegen con guantes blancos. Además de la banda carmesí de la orden napolitana de San Gennaro que cruza el pecho encima de su camisa blanca, en la casaca o guerrera luce tres placas o condecoraciones: la de la misma orden, de la que era gran maestre; la francesa del Saint-Esprit, recibido como caballero el 8 de septiembre de 1760; y la orden española de Carlos III creada por su padre en 1771.

Montado en un caballo bayo, ensillado sobre gualdrapa azul de flecos decorada por anchas bandas bordadas en oro, su pose bélica se refuerza mediante una pistola de arzón cuya funda hace juego con la manta del animal y una espada de rica empuñadura colgada del cinturón y enfundada en un tahalí de cuero en el que se halla sujeta la cruz de San Gennaro.
