Summary[edit]

Description
English: Rooftop View. Jokhang Temple, Lhasa, Tibet

Decorations seen here include the deer-park motif (photo left) and several dhvaja. These "Victory Banners" are derived from military standards. They symbolize the political-religious triumph of Buddhism in Tibet, and are also considered apotropaic (protecting against evil). They are typically found on rooftops and above gateways, and are made of gilt copper, gold-painted wood, or cloth.
