Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lewisian Gneiss The only land in this square is a few square metres of Lewisian gneiss. Most of this part of Lewis is made up of the Uig granite, but here there is an outcrop of the gneiss, which is the principal rock type in most of the Western Isles. It is the oldest rock in Britain, 3,700 million years old, and has been metamorphosed, folded and deformed repeatedly during the ensuing millions of years.
