Summary
[edit]DescriptionLeverkusen, Bayerwerke- fireless steam locomotive "SALOPHEN 22".jpg |
English: This cute engine once roamed the tracks of the extended 1.000mm narrow gauge railroad system of the Bayer works. The locomotive bears the name of one of Bayer's pharmaceutical products ("Salophen") and was built by the locomotive builder Hohenzollern in nearby Düsseldorf. The fireless engine is from 1917; since it didn't have a fire on board it was able to operate even in areas exposed to the danger of explosions. Now it is a technical monument. What is missing is the cladding of the boiler. By the way: In fact the boiler is not a boiler at all since it doesn't "boil" anything. Instead it was fed with high pressure steam from the company's power station. Operation on the last segment of the dense narrow gauge network ended in 1973. |
