Description

Description: Lettuce Festival Court and Officials. Front Row: Yachiyo Kawasaki, Toyo Nakatsuka, Virgie Reynolds (Miller), Queen Thelma Saito, Lee Bell (Bailey), June Yamashita, Bessie Tanigawa; back row: Sakaye Tamada, Major R. E. Wooden (Mayor of Kent), unidentified, Gussie Rogers, Yuki Onchi, Walter Clark. The Kent Lettuce Festival was held from 1934-1937. It was conceived to showcase Kent, the 'Lettuce Capital of the Northwest.' It attracted large crowds and featured parades, music, dancing, fireworks, a baseball game, etc., all of which was presided over by the Lettuce Queen and her court.
