Summary[edit]

Description

On 6 August 1962, Jamaica achieved independence from the UK.

As World War II came to a close, a sweeping movement of decolonisation overtook the world. At this time, the British Government and local politicians began a long transition of converting the Caribbean island from a crown colony into an independent state. In the elections of 1962, the JLP defeated the PNP, resulting in the ascension of Alexander Bustamante to the premiership in April of that year. On August 6, 1962, the Colony of Jamaica became an independent country, the Union Jack being ceremoniously lowered and replaced by the Jamaican flag throughout the country. Princess Margaret opened the first session of the Parliament of Jamaica on behalf of her sister, Queen Elizabeth II.

Jamaican independence resulted in a change in the way New Zealand communicated with the Caribbean nation. As the correspondence here shows, after August 6 1962, New Zealand communicated directly with Jamaica through the Jamaican Prime Minister’s office and the Jamaican office of the Minister for External Affairs. Prior to independence, New Zealand communicated with Jamaica via the United Kingdom. Alexander Bustamante was the first Jamaican Prime Minister and Minister for External Affairs at the same time.
