Elles ont été utilisées sur-tout pour les voiîtes des ponceaux et ensuite pour les bâti-ments que lon a construit plus tard lorsque la voie futposée : bâtiments de recettes, hangars, habitations, etc.Le transport par voie ferrée permettait alors davoir cesbriques à pied doeuvre à assez bon compte. 25S — la base des points dappui sur les culées et sur les piles,furent amenées de Hollande. Ces « klinkers » revenanttrès cher de même que les points dappui en pierres quivenaient tout taillés dEurope, on préféra plus tard pources points dappui la maçonnerie en moellons durs à mor-tier de ciment Portland ; sur cette maçonnerie spéciale ona logé directement, sans emploi de pierres de taille, lesgrosses pièces coulées en acier qui portent les tabliers. Le corail et les roches calcaires du pays donnent unechaux assez bonne, qui cependant na pas de qualitéshydrauliques. Les déchets pulvérisés de briqueterie donnent le cimentrouge. Au début, ce produit inspirant peu de confiance, onappliqua le ciment genre Portland venant dEurope pourpresquetouslesmortiers: le ciment rouge donnantdebonsrésultats, on limita plus tard lemploi du ciment dEurope.
