"Leland Scott Is Put Under Knife. Great Pole Vaulter Gets Along Well After an Operation. Leland Stanford Scott, former holder of the world's record in the pole vault was operated upon for appendicitis at the Pablola Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He is progressing favorably towards recovery. Scott was one of the most versatile athletes who ever attended Stanford. He was track captain in his senior year when he broke the world record for the 'high sticks' and on two occasions the intercollegiate field meet was decided in favor of Stanford by the points won in the last event of the day by the Alameda boy. He played center three-quarter on the varsity football team and would have made the triple S In baseball had this branch of sport not clothed with the track season. His friends tried to prevail. upon him to remain active In the world of sport after his graduation from college with a view of passing the thirteen foot mark but he met with an accident in training which prevented him from competing further and the much coveted mark has since been reached by Wright of Dartmouth."
