Description

Le Khedive Ismail a fait construire le palais Al Gezirah au Caire sur l'île du Nil du même nom, en 1869 pour servir de résidence aux monarques qu'il avait invités lors des célébrations de l'inauguration du canal de Suez dont l'impératrice Eugénie, épouse de Napoléon III et l'empereur François Joseph d'Autriche.

Ce sera quelques années plus tard, le lieu de la première représentation de l'Opéra Aida de Verdi.

Le palais Al Gezirah a été conçu dans le style néoclassique, par l'architecte autrichien Julius Franz (connu plus tard sous le nom de Franz Bey) et parl'architecte De Curel Del Rosso, concepteur du palais Abdin. L'architecte allemand Carl von Diebitsch en a conçu les décors et ameublements intérieurs.

Le palais est ensuite devenu un hôtel appartenant à divers propriétaires successifs. Aujourd'hui, le palais Gezira est la partie centrale de l'hôtel Marriott du Caire qui l'a restauré, étendu et doté de services et équipements modernes.
