Summary[edit]

Description

This ancient Roman aqueduct in southern France is one of the best existing Roman structures.

Built about 40-60 AD it still stands in essentially its' original condition. Standing 48.8 m (160 ft) high above the River Gard (or Garde). It was built to carry an estimated 40,000 m3 (8,800,000 imp gal) of water a day to the city of Nimes and continued in use for about 600 years.

Today it's a major tourist attraction and visitors can cross the river at the lower level. By arrangement, groups can be taken a walk through the topmost (empty) waterway which is 1.8 m (6 ft) high inside.
