Le Panthéon vu du jardin du Luxembourg


L'ambition de Soufflot, l'architecte du Panthéon à Paris était de rivaliser avec Saint-Pierre de Rome et Saint-Paul à Londres. Le péristyle monumental a été inspiré par le Panthéon d'Agrippa à Rome. À partir de 1874, des peintures sur toiles marouflées illustrant l'histoire de sainte Geneviève et l'épopée des origines chrétiennes et monarchiques de la France viennent orner le sanctuaire. Les grandes personnalités françaises sont inhumées dans la crypte, elles dessinent le visage de l'identité nationale. Une présentation permanente résume la vie et l'œuvre de ceux qui y reposent, de Voltaire et Rousseau à Alexandre Dumas. Le pendule de Foucault. Installé en 1851, démonté puis réinstallé en 1995, prouve la rotation de la Terre. extraits du site officiel
