Title |
late Medieval to early Post Medieval Finger Ring |
||
Description |
English: A corroded cast copper alloy signet or seal finger ring of late Medieval to early Post Medieval date. The bezel of the ring is rectangular in plan and flat on its upper surface (bezel measures 12.2mm long, 9mm wide and 3.3mm thick). The entire upper surface of the bezel is occupied by an indented design that is difficult to resolve due to corrosion, but can be interpreted as an owl perched in a tree. The design is flanked at each shoulder of the bezel by a straight transverse groove that borders the motif. Rings with impressed 'merchants' marks' on the bezel were used by merchants and traders particularly in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for impressing wax seals that attached to documents and letters. Unfortunately the owners of the marks are difficult to identify. The ring measures 24.8 mm diameter, 6.7 mm wide, 2.4 mm thick and weighs 9.45 grams. |
