Large gold strikes were made on Anvil Creek, near what would become the city of Nome, Alaska. Nome area gold was often the size of rock salt or smaller, but a number of very large nuggets were also found. This photo shows a particularly large nugget found at claim No. 1 below Anvil. At the time, this nugget was worth $320.00.
