| Description |
English: Starting in 1890, Seattle's Lake Washington and Madison Park cable car line carried passengers between downtown and Madison Park. Cars ran every 3.5 minutes. The owners of the cable car company developed Madison Park as a recreation destination and residential area. On some Sundays, as many as 20,000 people visited the park.
This photo, taken around 1896, shows a Madison Street Cable Railway car at the Lake Washington end of the line. Three small boys stand or sit near the motormen. One motorman holds a baby girl. The car is covered with ads for patent medicines, food and shops.
