Text Appearing Before Image:
truthand beauty, most of us dorecognize their kinship and instriving for the one seek torealize the other. Beauty thatis only skin-deep and notbased on fitness and sinceritywill not satisfy us long. Itscall must come from within, and not be a mere echo ofsomething quite foreign andexternal to us. And this isnot denying that some of themost entirely successfuleffects in decoration are basedon reflections of the naturalworld without, interpreted interms of beautiful line andmass and color, but alwayssuffused with deeper mean-ings that well only from thesoul of man. II In minting the pure gold ofinfinite beauty into the dullercurrency of so-called decora-tion for the home, success canbe hoped for only when thereis some clear harmony ofthought and vision, so that The lace panel illustrated here would be only suit-able at the windows of a large hall or salon offormal use and character and o( architecturalimportance. As one of a series it would gain greatlyin charm and dignity by repetition.
Text Appearing After Image:
(8) the natural scenes reach us through a pure spirit and a mind uncorrupted. Thesetting in one case may be so vast and overwhelming, scenically as grand asa glimpse of white mountain peaks down a green valley, where a river flowswith the tint and chill of glaciers to the sea. The frame may be so big thatby no effort can we find the scale to set it down within the limits of ourdwellings walls. Only a little of the pure emotion it inspires may breathe intoour work a message of beauty that must last for long. With the growth of theart sense among the people, the need has arisen for its better expression in thehome and its intimate surroundings. Decoration, after all, is only the cover-ing of the dry bones of necessary con-struction with the lovely integument ofline, form, color and texture serving tobring us into closer and friendlier relationwith the places we live in, and providingwith Ufe and beauty that which withoutit would be meaningless and dead. Though the windows serve as eyes
