On the Merris war memorial, the statue of a widow mourns war victims.

Français : Ce monument aux morts de Merris (59) a été sculpté par Maurice Ringot et inauguré dans les années 1920. La photo en montre un détail : une statue quasiment à échelle humaine de la veuve d’un poilu se tient devant la plaque qui mentionne les noms des « enfants de Merris » victimes de la guerre. La veuve est éplorée et les craquelures sur son corps (dues aux intempéries, le monument étant à l’extérieur sur une place publique) accentuent l’aspect dramatique de la scène.
English: This war memorial in Merris (North of France) was sculpted by Maurice Ringot and unveiled in the 1920s. The picture shows a detail of the composition : the human-scale statue of a WWI French soldier’s widow is in front of a plaque reading the names of war victims that were born in Merris. The widow is tearful, and the cracks on her body (due to the weather as the memorial is situated outside, on a public place) emphasises the dramatic effect of the scene. |
