Description

Missolonghi ou Messolongi est connue pour avoir été le lieu de la mort du poète Byron venu soutenir la révolte des Grecs contre les Turcs.

Le siège de Missolonghi est un épisode clé de la guerre d'indépendance grecque dans les années 1820, plus par son importance politique que militaire car il contribua largement à faire basculer l’opinion européenne en faveur de l’Indépendance grecque.

La ville a été prise par les Turcs en 1826 après un très long siège au cours duquel périrent de nombreux habitants dont le héros Markos Botzaris (1789-1823).

Delacroix, Chateaubriand, Hugo, David d'Angers ont soutenu les Grecs dans leur lutte.
