DescriptionLa Martiniere Military, Lucknow..jpg |
School pipe and band practice. La Martiniere College was built by Major- General Claude Martin (1735-1800) who planned to have it as his country house (it was to have been called Constantia). He was a French soldier of fortune who then was employed by the British East India Company. He made his fortune in the Indigo and money lending businesses. He died before it was completed and in his will he left it and money for it to be turned into a school for "Anglo- Indians" . During the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the schoolboys of the school went to help defend the Residency of Lucknow during the siege and were honoured by being the only school to be awarded a battle honour by the British Army. During the mutiny the school was used as a base by the rebellious forces. Major General Martin is buried in the crypt. If you are in Lucknow it is certainly worth a look around. |
