Description

Photo d'archive de la Columbus-Haus

Le bâtiment a été conçu par l'architecte allemand Erich Mendelsohn, et construit sur le Potsdamer Platz entre 1930 et 1932 (à cet emplacement se trouve aujourd'hui la tour de Hans Kollhoff)

C'était un immeuble de bureaux et de commerces de 9 étages, très moderne pour l'époque avec ventilation mécanique. Incendié lors du soulèvement populaire de juin 1953 en RDA, il a été détruit en 1961.

Erich Mendelsohn (1887-1953) est un des plus importants architectes allemands du XXè siècle. Il a du fuir l'Allemagne en 1933 pour échapper aux persécutions des nazis envers les juifs. Il a émigré d'abord au Royaume-Uni, puis en Palestine pour se fixer aux USA en 1941.
