Les Romains construisirent ces édifices, réunis dans un immense ensemble, de la manière la plus simple et la plus économique en raison de leur état social. Les Romains n'employèrent presque exclusivement que la brique et le blocage. Les parements sont composés de briques triangulaires posées à plat, leur grand côté vers l'extérieur; au milieu des murs et des massifs, un béton, composé de gros cailloux et d'un excellent mortier, garnissait l'espace vide entre les briques. Afin de régler les assises et pour s'assurer des niveaux, des chaînes de grandes briques sont arasées à certaines hauteurs régulières; des arcs de décharge en briques, noyés dansla construction, répartissent les charges sur les points
