Title
Coupe à travers la cour Carrée
Description
English: West facade of the Cour Carrée of the Louvre with transverse sections of the north wing (on the right) and the central pavilion of the south wing (on the left), the latter with a design not reflecting what was built.

The print is composed of five impressions from 4 engraved copper plates, one used twice. The engraved titles are, from left to right:

  1. Le profil qui montre le dedans du grand Vestibule du Louvre [Profile of the grand Vestibule of the Louvre]
  2. Eslevation de la moitie du principal corps de logis du Louvre, du costé de la cour, basti sous Henry II, et conduit par l'Abbé de Clagny [Elevation of the part of the principal corps de logis of the Louvre, court facade, built under Henry II, and the guidance of the Abbot of Clagny (Pierre Lescot)]
  3. (above): Elevation du grand Vestibule faict de l'ordonnance de Mr. Mercier [Elevation of the grand Vestibule of the Louvre done to the design of Mr. Mercier]; (below): Eslevation du gra[n]d Vestibule du Louvre basti sous Louis XIII, et conduit par Jacques Mercier [Elevation of the grand Vestibule of the Louvre built under Louis XIII, and conducted by Jacques Mercier]
  4. same as 2
  5. Gros Pavillon du Roy [King's Large Pavilion]

The central pavilion in the figure, the Grand Vestibule, is now known as the Pavillon de l'Horloge. To its left is the Lescot wing, and to its right, the Lemercier wing. The pavilion at the far left (shown in transverse section) corresponds in position to the Pavillon des Arts, and the pavilion at the far right (the top part shown in elevation), to the Pavillon de Beauvais.

Notes
  • According to Deutsch (pp. 214–215, 266–293, 354–356), the design depicted in the left transverse section (of the central pavilion in the south wing) is actually based on a lost drawing (or drawings) by Jacques Lemercier for the Pavillon de l'Horloge, and she suggests that the first copper plate was not originally intended for use in the assembled print. The first plate also includes (to the right of the transverse section of the pavilion) the elevation of the left avant corps and one and a half additional bays of the principal wing. Only the left half of the first extra bay is needed in the assembled print, which was supposed to be created by attaching a separately printed piece of paper with the two extra half-bays removed. However, in several examples the extra half-bays have been included by mistake (giving four bays between the first two avant corps of the principal wing, rather than the three seen in the actual building), e.g., BnF RES-V-371 and Jacques-François Blondel's Architecture françoise of 1756:.
