Description

Dessinée en 1865 par Friedrich August Stüler, élève de Schinkel, l'Alte Nationalgalerie a été inaugurée en 1876.

L'allure de temple du bâtiment est liée à une ébauche du Roi Frédéric-Guillaume IV, qui voulait édifier au centre de l'île des musées une salle de conférences en forme de temple antique surélevé.

Initialement consacré à l'Art Allemand (1871), le musée conserve et présente aujourd'hui les collections de peintures et de sculptures nationales et européennes du XIXème siècle. C'est l'équivalent du Musée d'Orsay à Paris.
