Title |
Naozane's Challenge (from the Kabuki play "Ichi-no-tani Futaba Gunki") |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
English: The victorious Genji general Kumagai Naozane spies a defeated Heike warrior Taira no Atsumori heading on horseback into the sea, where he is hoping to make it to his clan's fleet, anchored offshore. "It is cowardly to turn your back on your enemy," Naozane cries, beckoning with his fan, "come back!" Atsumori returns to fight, and Naozane beheads him. But it is a tragic episode, for Atsumori is but a youth, and at dawn, before the battle began, his flute playing had been heard by all.
日本語: 四代目中村歌右衛門の熊谷次郎直実、初代中村福助の無官太夫あつ盛。 (嘉永3年(1850年)5月、大坂中の芝居上演、『一谷嫩軍記』より。) |
