Transcribed from front of photograph: "Seattle Buildings. King County Court House. First. 3rd Ave. and Yesler Way . Built 1860; acquired by Seattle 1891. Exterior. Frame. View of front from left side. Ca. 1882. Public school classes were held here from 1864 to 1868." Transcribed from back of photograph: “Public School classes were held in this, originally the “old” County Building, at Third and Jefferson, from 1864-1868, before the community had its first school structure. Teachers during these years included Dillis B. Ward, Mrs. Wm. Hammond, Mrs. Emma Preston, Mrs. Mary A. Smith, and Miss Carrie Bacon." Building served as the King County Courthouse and then Seattle's first City Hall. Located on 3rd Ave. between Yesler Way and Jefferson Street.

"Built 1860" is wrong. If a county building was used as a school 1864-1868, it was the earlier one on the south side of Yesler Way. This one was built 1876, and the first of many extensions (the only one at the time this photo was taken) was the addition of a courtroom in 1882.
Different sources variously date this photo 1882 or 1886.
